Independent Reading

Philosophy
The idea behind the Independent Reading Program is to provide an opportunity for students in the seventh and eighth grade to increase reading and literacy. To foster the love of reading and broaden their exposure to various genres, writing styles and authors. The Media Specialist and Language Arts teachers will collaborate in the design, structure, and logistics of this program.

Structure

At the beginning of each quarter marking period, grade level language arts classes will be assigned a genre in which students will
choose a title to read and be given a task to complete. Students are expected to read outside of school but will receive limited in-school guidance and support in completing tasks. In addition to some class time, students will be scheduled to come to the Library during 9th period where they will receive supplementary assistance in their reading and for the assignment.
