• Board Annual Timeline 2016-2017

    The Mountain Lakes Board of Education welcomes our community to become familiar with the general annual timeline for Board business. This timeline highlights significant events and is not meant to be a comprehensive list of all Board of Education issues and decisions. Additionally, there is Board business that we are legally required to keep confidential such as personnel matters and negotiation issues.      January:

    • Board reorganization after Board election - effective 2017
    • Joint BOE / Borough Council Meeting
    • Review Buildings & Grounds Supervisor's Contract
    • Review of preliminary fiscal budget numbers
    • Review of Board of Education mandatory training for Board members
    • Review of Light Usage Policy (7511)

    February:

    • Review of budget in progress
    • Annual School Board Ethics Presentation

    March:

    • Math in Action presentation
    • Recognition of winter sports teams, National Merit Scholars, musicians and other academic achievements of our students

     April:

    • Joint BOE / Boonton Township meeting
    • Annual meeting with New Jersey School Board Association (NJSBA) representative to review compilation of board self-assessments and Superintendent Evaluations
    • District and Superintendent goals update
    • Individual Board members submit financial disclosure forms to NJSBA Ethics Commission

     May:

    • Public budget hearing (1st meeting)
    • Adopt budget (2nd meeting)
    • Review, process and complete individual Board self-evaluation forms and submit for compilation
    • Review, process and complete individual Superintendent evaluation forms and submit for compilation
    • Review Business Administrator's Merit Goals
    • Preliminary discussion of goals for upcoming service year; Board Goals, District Goals and Superintendent Merit Goals
    • Review student code of conduct
    • Review and renew annual administrative contracts
    • Conduct public hearing on the Violence and Vandalism report
    • Approve other annual resolution items
    • Review enrollment projections for staff children for upcoming school year

     June: 

    • Conduct retreat for Board members
    • Schedule closed session meeting to organize narrative to complete the Superintendent evaluation
    • Finalize Superintendent Evaluation and conduct closed session summary conference with Superintendent
    • Review and revise Superintendent Evaluation instrument, and vote to release payment of merit payment
    • Discuss merit goals for Superintendent for the upcoming service year
    • Discuss Board annual goals for the upcoming service year
    • Discuss District annual goals for the upcoming school year
    • Review of Board of Education mandatory training for Board members
    • Review curriculum writing projects and their connection to increase student achievement
    • Recognition of spring sports teams, musicians and academic achievements of our students

     July:

    • Monitor and review progress of goals set forth in the district's long range education plan
    • Approve staff children enrollment for upcoming school year
    • Finalize and approve Superintendent merit goals
    • Finalize and approve Board goals
    • Finalize and approve District goals
    • BOE candidate petitions due

     August:

    • Superintendent develops goals and sets forth an action plan to achieve district goals
    • Review curriculum revisions and newly developed curricula

    September:

    • Review curriculum revisions and newly developed curricula
    • Review class sizes for the current academic year
    • Referendum vote

     October:

    • Conduct public hearing on the Violence and Vandalism report
    • Board of Education members attend NJSBA workshop

    November:

    • Annual School Election - effective 2015
    • Review progress of all students and student subgroups on all standardized testing
    • District and Superintendent goals update

    December: 

    • Review of budgetary priorities and their connection to student achievement
    • Review financial audit report/ consideration of corrective action plan if needed
