2013-2014 Initiatives: Common Core, PARCC & the Long Range ED Plan

logo The curriculum office is buzzing about the 2013-2014 school year. After all, this year we are beginning our new Long Range Education Plan. Under the leadership of our superintendent, we have planned for an exciting year of Critical Conservations that will kick off our new LREP! Learn more about it below
Furthermore, our teachers and administrators are diligently preparing for two major changes from both state and national mandates. The first, from Trenton, focuses on Student Growth Objectives, or SGOs. Also, New Jersey has joined over 45 other states in adopting new Common Core Literacy & Math Standards. This adoption will bring needed change to our curriculum program, especially as the PARCC assessment will replace the NJ ASK tests in 2015.

Our New Long Range Education Plan (LREP)

Every five years, the Mountain Lakes School District organizes with with our community and student stakeholders to create a Long Range Education Plan (LREP) that charts the course for our district. This year we will be designing our next plan. The LREP will address the academic and social development of our students, provide professional development for our distinguished faculty and focus on what we hope our graduates will contribute to society. Based on discussion with parents, students and teachers, we have selected a number of critical topics that we hope will be included in the 2014-2019 LREP.

While our administrative team and faculty are well versed in educational best practices, community input is essential in creating a plan that reflects our community's values and the wishes that we have for our students. We will place the presentation materials related to each conversation on this website. We also encourage participants to bring their own devices (tablet, laptop, or smartphone) to the presentations so that you can engage with the content in real time and provide the presenters with your feedback during the presentation.

Moving from the NJASK to the PARCC

In 2014, our students will take the NJASK & HSPA for the final time. Next year, all NJ students will join students from across the country in taking the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College & Careers (PARCC) examinations. This year our teachers are preparing for that transition by aligning their lessons to the Common Core State Standards and the PARCC Model Content Frameworks. In addition to the PARRC, dozens of CommonCore states will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment, which just released practice versions of its online tests for Common Core State Standards in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 including ELA Performance Tasks & ELA Reading tests. The tests can be accessed directly (as a guest) using the student interface at sbacpt.tds.airast.org/student/.

Implementing the Common Core Standards

This year we are continue with our Common Core State Standards implementation initiative. For the past two years, all curriculum revisions have incorporated the new Common Core standards, including the district's entire mathematics curricula that was revised in 2013.
