Board of Education Committees

The Mountain Lakes Board of Education works as a board of committees; however, no committee may make any policy or decision. The committee’s role is to provide oversight and investigate issues closely. The committee then provides recommendations and information (both pros and cons) to the board as a whole so that the board may make thoughtful decisions. Each committee works closely with the district’s administration. Each board member is on an average of three committees. In general, committees meet monthly, but certain committees may meet more or less due to the scope of its work and the current conditions of the district. Each committee has a chairperson that is appointed by the board president as soon as practical after the annual reorganization meeting. The role of the committee chair is to set the committee meeting calendar and to communicate the schedule with the committee members. The chairperson assists in setting the agenda of the meeting and communicating the agenda with the members of the committee. The chair is also responsible for submitting the committee report to the business administrator who includes it in the board packet that each board member receives weekly. The chairperson is the spokesperson for the committee and makes a verbal report to the entire board at the public board meetings. Committee chairpersons are also the contact person for community members that have questions pertaining to board work. Committee members and the chairperson's contact information may be found below.

The Communications Committee for the Mountain Lakes Board of Education is charged with oversight of both internal and external communications regarding Board of Education issues. Internal communication encompasses communication among the various board committees, the full board communications as well as communication with the superintendent of schools. External communication is all communication from the Board of Education to the Mountain Lakes constituencies including students, parents and community members.

The Extra/co-curricular Athletics Committee is responsible for providing oversight of extra/ co-curricular and athletic activities in the district. The committee helps set policy pertaining to extra/co-curricular and athletics activities; provide oversight of the facilities used by extracurricular and athletics activities, review financial issues pertaining to extracurricular and athletics activities, and review personnel issues involved with extracurricular and athletic matters.

The role of the Facilities Committee is to maintain and improve the physical environment in which students work and play so they may function at optimal level. The committee reviews and monitors the facilities improvement plan and reviews contracts as appropriate.

The Finance Committee is responsible for providing oversight of the current year’s budget and for helping set the parameters for the development of the next school year budget. The Finance Committee reviews appropriate contracts and discusses projects to meet the district’s goals. The Finance Committee works closely with the Business Administrator.

The Negotiations Committee is responsible for the negotiations of the MLAA (Mountain Lakes Administration Association) contract and the MLEA (Mountain Lakes Education Association) contract. The committee is also responsible for the negotiation of the Mountain Lakes and Boonton Township sending and receiving contract.

The Personnel Committee of the Board is responsible for reviewing matters relating to employees of the District, including evaluation and discipline. At times, the Committee participates in interviews of candidates for key administrative posts, providing feedback to the Superintendent and the rest of the Board. The obligation of confidentiality with respect to employee matters governs the work of the Committee and significantly limits the extent to which the work of the Committee may be reported or discussed in public.

The Policy Committee shall review existing policies, revise them when necessary, write new policies when appropriate, present policies to the Board for introduction/action and establish a procedure for maintaining the Policy Manuals of the District.

The Program Committee is charged with the responsibility of coordinating district curriculum and programs. It meets to discuss adoption and revision of curriculum and textbooks. The Committee reports its findings to the Board and suggests program modifications that may be appropriate to meet the Long Range Educational Plan (LREP) of the District.

The Special Services Committee of the Board of Education is responsible for reviewing policies and/or programs, and/or matters, legal or otherwise, relating to students identified as eligible to receive Special Education and Related Services. Although no identifying student information is shared with the Committee members, the obligation of confidentiality with respect to student matters governs the work of the Committee and significantly limits the extent to which the work of the Committee may be reported or discussed in public.

The Special Committee on Long Term Needs is an ad-hoc committee responsible for analyzing the districts long term curricular and facility needs and establishing a plan to address those needs.

The Safety Committee is an ad Hoc Committee to review any local, state and federal recommendations/guidelines for improving and maintaining safe and secure environments within our schools. The committee will also identify and review best practices. The focus will be to address probable threats to safety and not address every threat that is possible. The Committee will review and compile all findings and make recommendations to the superintendent for consideration and potential implementation.

While Board Committee Meetings are not open to the public, the Board always welcomes public participation in the development of policies and practices. Should a member of the community be interested in a particular aspect of Board committee work, the inpidual should contact the appropriate committee chair or the Superintendent to arrange an opportunity to meet with that committee.
