NOTICE OF BOARD VACANCY - Deadline July 16, 2021


The Mountain Lakes Board of Education is seeking a qualified person to fill a present vacancy on the Board.  The successful candidate will serve until the next reorganization meeting in January, 2022.  All qualified persons are invited to submit a written request for consideration of his or her candidacy for the vacancy on or before Friday, July 16, 2021, via mail/hand delivery, and an electronic copy via email to Alex Ferreira, School Business Administrator / Board Secretary at [email protected]The candidates should also submit a resume with their written responses.


Candidates may review N.J.S.A. 18A:12-1, “Qualifications” and  Board Policy 0143, which is posted on the District’s website: to review the qualifications for membership on the Mountain Lakes Board of Education and the interview/selection procedures that will be used in the selection of the successful candidate.

  • July 3, 2021: Posting of ad
  • July 16, 2021: Candidate letter of intent and resume due to School Business Administrator / Board Secretary
  • July 19, 2021: Candidate interview and Board deliberation
  • July 20, 2021 to August 15, 2021: Candidate notification and fingerprinting
  • August 16, 2021: Anticipated BOE appointment and administration of oath of office for the term of August 16, 2021 to reorganization meeting of January 2022


  • Candidates remit letter of interest and resume
  • School Business Administrator / Board Secretary confirms receipt of letter of intent and resume, and notifies candidate of interview schedule for July 19, 2021
  • Candidate is expected to prepare 2-3 minute statement to address BOE at July 19, 2021, interview
  • BOE may choose to ask questions of the candidates
  • BOE deliberates on proposed candidates in Executive Session
  • Board President to notify candidates of anticipated appointment and next steps in preparation for appointment on August 16, 2021


The Mountain Lakes Board of Education will have three (3) full term vacancies in the November 2, 2021 annual School Election.  A full term on the school board runs for three (3) years.

A candidate must file a nominating petition with the county clerk for his or her name to appear on the ballot during the November Annual School Election. The deadline to submit the nominating petition is 4:00 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2021. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

Prospective school board candidates can download candidate information from the New Jersey School Boards Association’s web site .The School Board Candidate Kit includes information about nominating petitions, legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member.  Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included.
