2016-2017 Initiatives: PD, Referendum Planning, Running & Winning & the Long Range ED Plan

The 2016-2017 school year is an exciting time for all of us in the curriculum office. This year we are continuing our many partnerships with community groups. I am especially looking forward to working with the League of Women Voters who are organizing another great Running and Winning program for our students in May 2017.

Also, as part of our district’s Long Range Education Plan, each of the schools will focus on our four major areas: Balance Tradition & Innovation, Promote “Grit” among our students, Foster a positive, safe learning environment for all students, and Manage unfunded mandates. You can read more about this plan below.

Finally, our teachers and administrators will work hard with our community members to plan for a new referendum initiative in which we hope to conclude for a September or October 2017 vote! This will be our major focus and we hope to see many residents at our various meetings. your input will be invaluable!

Long Range Ed Plan 2016-2017

We are so excited about our plans this year which include new policies and professional development for our staff. In the "Balance Innovation & Tradition" area, we will have complete integration of Canvas in secondary schools and introduce Google classroom to enhance student course management and delivery of content materials. We will also design classroom spaces for the upcoming referendum that will provide the skill development and needs of students, preparing them for the 21st Century workplace.

For the section on "Promoting 'Grit' Among our Students," we will devote all PD activities for our teachers on social & emotional learning. We will lead an effort to engage faculty, community members and students in discussions regarding authentic learning, student stress and managing the expectations related to grades.

Finally, as part of the "Foster a Positive, Safe Learning Environment" area, we will investigate best practices for effective use of instructional time including alternative bell schedules.

Running & Winning 2017

Sponsored and run by the Mountain Lakes League of Women Voters, the daylong Running & Winning workshop will give sixty 11th-12th grade MLHS girls the opportunity to explore public service as a career. This year we will be partnering with our Paterson Connection colleagues again and inviting twelve Kennedy High School students to join us. Highlights of the workshop will include interviewing female elected officials and political operatives about their experiences running for office and planning and running their own mock campaign. By collaborating in small groups, the students will be encouraged to explore and develop their own leadership abilities. Learn more at the link below.
