Friends of the Arts

 

Friends of the Arts (FOTA) is a not-for-profit organization of parents, teachers, and, administrators committed to supporting and advocating the visual and performing arts in the Mountain Lakes School District. FOTA strives to create awareness of the benefits derived from students participation in arts programs and recognizes the achievements of individual and group efforts.

Here are just a few of the ways that FOTA's fundraising efforts have supported the arts at MLHS:

• Scholarships for graduating seniors
• Thousands of dollars for arts teacher grants
• FOTA Robe and display case
• Sponsor JazzFest for band members
• Art hanging system for main lobby
• Dinners for holiday concert, play, and musical participants
• Major contributor to Handbell Program

The FOTA Robe is presented each year by Friends of the Arts to a senior in the cast or crew who has gone above and beyond and made a significant contribution to the success of the show. Often this individual has helped to encourage a sense of community and joy within the production. Based on a decades-old Broadway tradition, the MLHS FOTA robe honors a crew member, or a member of the cast who is the unsung hero of the production. It is not awarded based on the amount of years the recipient has been involved in MLHS musicals, but on the significance of his or her contribution. The Robe is taken out only on this occasion and is on permanent display in the school lobby throughout the year.

Graduating seniors interested in applying for the FOTA Scholarship may apply for the Friends of the Arts Scholarship Award. This scholarship is available to students who have shown an active interest and leadership in the arts and who share their talents in the community.
